Overview

The Canvas Implementation Project is part of the Trinity DX program. It aims to ensure Trinity successfully transitions from TLearn (Moodle), our current Learning Management System (LMS), to Instructure’s Canvas within the 2023-2024 academic year. This transition is an opportunity to give the Trinity community access to a cutting-edge 21st-century LMS. Through our research and community feedback we feel that Canvas is well suited to expand learning activities, improve assessment strategies, and encourage collaborations. We believe Canvas will allow faculty and students to engage readily and intuitively inside and outside the classroom, increase technological accessibility among faculty and staff, and foster pedagogical innovations on campus.

The ITS Academic Technology team is committed to assisting faculty and students with the transition. We understand that no two courses or instructors are the same and will be available over the coming weeks to answer questions and provide personal support. Please return to this page for continued updates on our progress and for resources that will facilitate the move to Canvas.

Transition

Canvas transition from Moodle will take place over two semesters. ITS will be very involved to ensure a personalized approach to the move:

  • ITS will solicit a small group of early adopters to teach their courses on Canvas beginning in the Summer of 2023. We will use feedback from this group to further refine our transition, communication, and training and support processes for the Fall 2023 Semester.

  • In the Fall 2023 Semester, existing faculty will have the option of remaining with Moodle or Transitioning over to Canvas.

  • ITS will meet with all academic departments beginning in the Spring 2023 semester to discuss the transition from Moodle to Canvas in detail.

  • The ITS team of instructional designers and support staff will work with faculty, staff, and students to ensure a smooth transition. Every faculty member will be assigned an instructional designer from the semester before they are expected to teach on Canvas.

FAQs

Please continue to refer back to this question list, as it will be updated as new questions are submitted.

How much time will we have to switch from TLearn to Canvas?

Training is scheduled to begin in April 2023; if you want to use Canvas in the Fall semester of 2023, you must move over by August 11th.  All remaining faculty must be moved over by December 8th, 2023.

How long will we have access to TLearn?

Moodle (TLearn) will be available to faculty and students through the fall semester of 2023.

When can we start using Canvas?

Faculty can start accessing Canvas in April 2023, and early adopters can begin teaching in the Summer of 2023.

Can I teach with TLearn in the Fall and start building in Canvas?

Yes, you will be able to access both of the LMS. Please note that TLean will only be available until the first day of classes in Spring 2024.

Who will help migrate all the tools and content I have built in TLearn over to Canvas?

The ITS - Academic Technology Team will support faculty in migrating from TLearn to Canvas.

I am a part-time faculty, and I lose network access in the summer. How can I access Canvas to start prepping for my courses?

Please request extended network access from HR, and include the extension dates. HR will validate the request with the Department Chair and notify ITS of the extension.

What tools from Moodle (TLearn) will transfer to Canvas?

All tools except Safe Exam will transfer to Canvas.  Respondus LockDown Browser will replace Safe Exam in Summer 2023.

To check if your tool or feature has migrated over, email academictechnology@trinity.edu and provide the following:

  •  Name of the tool/feature

  •  Description of what it does

  •  List of courses that used this tool

Will there be a student view?

Yes, faculty have access to view courses as a student.

Will instructors be required to add and drop students manually from a course?

No, Canvas pulls updates from Colleague every 3 hours; when these updates occur, students are automatically added or dropped.
